About Katahdin Sheep

Katahdin Sheep originated in Main and are named after Mt Katahdin.

Folklore Farms produces primarily registered Katahdin sheep.  Registrations are maintained by Katahdin Hair Sheep International.  Their website is great for information about the breed and to find breeders in your area.

Katahdins are a hair breed of sheep meaning they do not need to be sheared and do not produce wool - instead they shed like buffalo. They are highly resistant to internal parasites and are leading the way in genetic resistance to scrape.

Most non Katahdin sheep are "docked" meaning their tails are shortened or removed at a young age, this does have a functional purpose the wool on most sheep will collect manure and other unhealthy matter. This functional requirement is removed for Katahdins and the breed standard recommends leaving the tail intact.

Katahdins are able to produce and thrive on pasture and grass based feeding systems.

No Shearing, No Docking, Genetic Resistance, Grass based feeding. These traits allow us to steward our flock with minimal human influence and impact to their natural state of being.

The low maintenance needs for Katahdins also makes them an excellent selection for Stock dog owners, we can offer a full Stock dog outfit with a full compliment of Castrated male Katahdins.   You have all you need to work your stock dog. Besides food and water & mineral, they generally only need to cared for once a year and it should only take about 15 to 20 minutes per animal.
